Monsters of Hip Hop FUN!

The CPAA Dance Company and Kidz Crew attended Monsters of Hip Hop in Atlanta GA last weekend. We had an awesome time! The kids attended classes all weekend by some of the top hip hop choreographers and dancers in the industry.  Classes started on Friday night and continued of Saturday and Sunday...all day long! We joined other dance studios and hip hop crews at the Sheraton in downtown Atlanta to learn from the best!

On Saturday evening, Monsters let all of the studios perform in a Showcase in order to allow the choreographers to critique the dances from the studios before we actually attend a competition. Some of the Dance Company members performed their small group hip hop dance to "Come and Get It". They did awesome...and the choreographers LOVED it! It was our first time performing the dance in a stage set venue. And I couldn't be prouder of the girls. The had the audience hyped! Congratulations of performing so well ladies!

They also held a Hip Hop Freestyle Battle for all of the kids on Saturday evening. Tim from the Kidz Crew won $50 and 3rd place in a very competitive battle. Congrats Tim! Some of our parents GOT DOWN in the Parent's Battle, too! Melony, Latesha, Janelle and Sherronda all showed off their skills on stage. They killed it...and got a nice workout too! Latesha got 2nd in the Parent's Battle and almost came home with a scholarship for her daughter. Way to go Tesha!

Overall, we had a GREAT time. Monsters of Hip Hop is always one of my favorite conventions. This week, the kids came in practicing all of the dances they learned at the convention. We can't wait till next year to do it all over again!

Dancing with Abby Lee Miller!

Hailey and Zoe with Abby Lee Miller
Abby Lee Miller, from the hit TV show "Dance Moms", came to Charlotte to do a meet and greet and teach a master class to a ballroom full of dance students from all over the Southeast. Three students from CPAA went to the Renaissance Charlotte Suites Hotel on Sunday, September 29th to meet and take class from Abby Lee Miller - Hailey, Taylor and Zoe. Not only did they get to meet Abby Lee, they also met Maddie and Mackenzie from "Dance Moms" too!

24Seven Dance Convention Results!

This past weekend, the CPAA Dance Company traveled to Atlanta GA to participate in the 24Seven Dance Convention and Competition. At a dance convention, dancers from different studios come together to take classes from awesome dance choreographers and instructors. At 24Seven, the faculty includes Twitch (So You Think You Can Dance), Sonya Tayeh (So You Think You Can Dance), Lauren Adams, Brooke Pierotti, Jess Hendricks,  Peter Chu, Francisco Gella and Anthony Hendricks.

The 24Seven stage
They took classes all day on Saturday and Sunday. They had an audition for the "Non Stop Dancer Scholarship" on Saturday. Congratulations to Hailey and Zoe for receiving a Junior (11-12 years old) Non Stop Dancer Scholarship and to Cameron for receiving a Mini (7-10 years old) Non Stop Dancer Scholarship.

In addition to auditioning for the Non Stop Dancer Scholarship, the dancers were able to receive scholarships for excellence in classes. Congratulations to Chloe, Grace and Riley for receiving class "Hi Five" scholarships!

The Rubies (Alex, Ellora and Mar'yana) took classes on Saturday with some of the faculty as a beginning introduction to the "convention world." They had a performance on stage to show what they learned. They did awesome, and they weren't nervous one bit!

What a great weekend! The girls learned so much while having fun at the same time. Isn't that what dance should be about? We can't wait to attend 24Seven next year!

Hip Hop Hooray...for MONSTERS!

Monsters of Hip Hop Stage

The CPAA Kidz Crew and a couple of CPAA Dance Company members attended Monsters of Hip Hop in Washington DC this past weekend. Monsters of Hip Hop is a dance convention where they learn dances from the HOTTEST Hip Hop choreographers/dancers in the industry.

First Competition of 2013 - West Coast MANIA!

Ellora, Mar'yana and Alex at WCDE
Last weekend, the CPAA Dance Company traveled to Greenville, SC to attend West Coast Dance Explosion (WCDE), the first competition and convention of the 2013 dance season! We started the weekend with the first part of the competition on Friday. First up to perform were our youngest company members: Ellora, Mar'yana and Alex, the Rubies of the CPAA Dance Company. This was their first competition EVER, but they were ready! I was more nervous than they were! They, of course, did awesome. Lauren, Zoe and Grace also performed on Friday night with our little ones.

Before classes on Saturday morning

Early Saturday morning, the girls were up ready to take classes all day. Their faculty consisted of choreographers that have danced with everyone from Usher to Chris Brown to many performing companies in New York and Los Angeles. They took classes from these well-known instructors all day Saturday and Sunday. They danced till they couldn't move! They also had the chance to audition for scholarships just like a professional dancer would. Congrats to Grace and Riley for winning a scholarship to attend WCDE for free next season!

About to perform "Tango"
Awards Ceremony
Stretching in "Sapphire" Jazz Class
On Saturday evening, they competed all of their dances for the first time this year. Troy and I were too excited to see our creations come to life on the stage. They did a GREAT job, and I couldn't have been prouder of this group of girls. They came to Greenville on a mission - ready to KILL IT. And they did. They received many high marks and compliments from parents and teachers from other studios. So, CONGRATULATIONS!

So now, we're back on the grind getting ready for our next competitions and conventions. This upcoming weekend, the CPAA Kidz Crew is attending Monsters of Hip Hop in Washington DC. They are taking classes from the biggest hip hop choreographers in the industry. We'll keep you posted on how their convention goes!

Until then...stretch it out kids!
